Golden Jubilee: Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Mark 50th Anniversary in Benin City. – By Ruben Mario Brodrick
The Congregation of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (SSH) celebrated its 50th anniversary recently, marking five decades of faith, healing, and a strong embrace of African identity.
The historic Golden Jubilee took place at St. Paul Catholic Church, with Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze presiding over the Eucharistic celebration on the Solemn Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.

A Legacy of Vision and Service: Founded in 1975 by Archbishop Patrick Ebosele Ekpu of Blessed Memory, the SSH emerged from a post-civil war in Nigeria, with a mission to foster unity and indigenize the Catholic faith. The sisters are distinct for their culturally significant blue and white Aso-Oke habit, a powerful symbol of their African heritage and spiritual devotion.
Over the past 50 years, the SSH has grown into a global apostolate, extending its reach across continents through ministries in education, healthcare, social justice, and mission work. Their dedication to unity through redemptive love is evident in their tireless efforts in peace promotion, women’s empowerment, and serving the vulnerable.
The congregation’s history also includes profound sacrifices, such as the heroic act of Sister Dr. Henrietta Ebosiogwe Alokha, who tragically died in 2020 while saving schoolgirls.
Her selfless act immortalized the SSH’s spirit of “service unto death, love without measure,” leading to the establishment of an endowment fund in her memory.

Celebrating Fidelity and Future Hope:
The jubilee celebration also included the silver jubilee of religious profession for two sisters and the final profession of vows by three others, symbolizing the enduring call to consecrated life within the SSH. The theme, “Faithful is He Who Calls,” served as a powerful testament to divine fidelity.
Meanwhile, Benin City was abuzz with pilgrims, former students, and clergy who gathered to witness the momentous occasion, described as a blend of history and grace. The Golden Jubilee was a vibrant tribute to African resilience, the flourishing of indigenous charisms, and the far-reaching vision of a local Church.
Archbishop Patrick Ekpu’s dream, nurtured decades ago, has truly blossomed into a Pan-African religious force, continuing to radiate the Sacred Heart of Jesus to the world.
