Habemus Papam
American Cardinal Prevost Becomes Pope Leo XIV
In a landmark moment for the Catholic Church, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, an American prelate with deep ties to Latin America, was today elected as the new Pope, taking the name Leo XIV. White smoke, the centuries-old signal of a papal election, poured from the Sistine Chapel, sending waves of excitement through the throngs of faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square.
The traditional proclamation, “Habemus Papam!” (“We have a Pope!”), delivered by Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti, revealed the identity of the 267th successor to Saint Peter: Pope Leo XIV (born Robert Francis Prevost).
Born on September 14, 1955, the 69-year-old Pope Leo XIV is the first person from the United States to lead the global Catholic Church. His journey to the papacy includes extensive missionary work in Peru, where he became a citizen in 2015.
He served as the Bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023 and was the Prior General of the Order of Saint Augustine from 2001 to 2013.
Prior to his election, Pope Leo XIV held significant Vatican roles, appointed by the late Pope Francis. He served as the Prefect of the influential Dicastery for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, positions that provided him with a comprehensive understanding of the Church’s global landscape.
In his inaugural address from the basilica’s balcony, Pope Leo XIV offered a message of peace and a call to missionary evangelization, echoing the themes of his predecessors. He greeted the crowd with “Peace be with you,” linking it to the resurrection of Christ, and notably donned the traditional red papal cape.
Pope Leo XIV’s election, reportedly on the second day of the conclave, marks a historic turning point, making him the first American to hold the papacy and the second Pope from the Americas. The world now watches with anticipation to see the direction he will chart for the Catholic Church.
